What is Project Graduation? Graduation is a time of great excitement and joy, a time for celebrating past achievements and new beginning. All too often the high-spirited, unsupervised celebrating of the occasion results in alcohol and drug-related accidents. Concerned citizens recognized the need for a positive means of protecting young lives while providing the opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled evening of celebration. The Project Graduation concept has been a nationwide effort endorsed by parents, schools and communities. The purpose of this party is to congratulate the seniors for completing high school, as well as to provide a safe, enjoyable environment for these students on their graduation night. The success of the Project Graduation endeavor is immeasurable. The number of young people who now treasure the memory of this most important night, who might otherwise have met with tragedy, can never be known. It is hoped that these young adults will carry into the future the message that a good time can be had without the use of alcohol and drugs. Project Graduation at C.E. King High School The tradition of Project Graduation began at C.E. King High School in 1998 with a vision for future graduating classes to continue this event in the spirit of safety. It is an safe, chaperoned all-night alcohol and drug-free celebration for all KHS graduating seniors. Since there is no state or school funding for this event, the parents of the senior class begin to plan the fundraising events needed to support this project during their student's sophomore or junior year. An executive board and committees are formed to address the various planning needs. Parents attend meetings throughout the senior year to discuss ways to obtain financial support and determine fundraising events. The students have a fun night of movies, music, games, entertainment and food while they enjoy the company of their friends. Why is Project Graduation Important? In an effort to celebrate with as many of their classmates as possible, graduates often drive from party to party. Project Graduation provides a safe alternative to party hopping; it keeps all of the graduates off of the roads, prevents any of them from becoming an accident statistic, and allows their parents to rest easy knowing their son/daughter is safely celebrating. PROJECT GRADUATION The original Project Graduation event grew out of a series of tragedies that occurred in 1987 & 1988, in Maine. In a span of two years, a total of 18 students were killed in alcohol and drug related automobile accidents during the graduation season. As a result to these tragic losses the State of Maine organized and started the first Project Graduation event. |
GRADUATION! As a rite of passage, graduation night is unequaled in the eyes of youth. It is a night for teenagers to be proud, to celebrate their past achievements; and to look forward to the future. But some teens mistakenly think that the best way to celebrate on graduation night is to drink alcohol. In the past, graduation night parties involving alcohol and drugs left some graduating seniors with hangovers, embarrassing memories, and in trouble with their parents, friends and/or the law enforcement. Some others were not so lucky. |
